You can use your present (foreign) driving license for a limited time as an international resident in the Netherlands, after which you must obtain a Dutch driving license.

Licences are valid for 10 or 15 years from the date of issue for EU and EFTA nations. You can drive in the Netherlands for up to 15 years with this license as long as it is still valid. If your foreign driver’s license is going to expire while you are in the Netherlands, you must exchange it for a Dutch driver’s license.

Foreign driving licenses are valid for six months (185 days) from the date of registration in all other countries (including the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba).

A valid international driver’s license

If you have a Dutch or European Union driver’s license, you can also get an international driver’s license. The ANWB sells an international driver’s license booklet (website in Dutch). They provide an official booklet that includes your personal information as well as a stamp. It has a one-year or three-year validity period (subject to a fee). Please keep in mind that for some countries, an international driver’s license is insufficient, and extra documentation may be necessary. It’s a good idea to verify ahead of time if you’ll need an international driver’s license or other papers to drive lawfully outside of the EU.
